How to Tell If Your Home Needs More Insulation
You do not need tools to spot the early warning signs. Your house tells you. Here is what to watch for.
Some Rooms Stay Hot While Others Feel Fine
Uneven temperatures are the clearest signal. Second floors and bonus rooms sit closest to the attic, so they heat up first.
Say your upstairs runs 5 to 10 degrees warmer than your downstairs in July. Heat is crossing the ceiling faster than your AC can pull it back out. We wrote a full breakdown of why your upstairs feels hot in DFW if that sounds like your home.
Your Heating and Cooling Bills Keep Climbing
Compare this year’s summer bills to the same months two years ago. Rates change, so look at usage in kilowatt hours rather than dollars.
If your usage is trending up and your habits have not changed, something in the building envelope is slipping. Insulation settles and compresses over time. It loses R-value as it does.
You Feel Drafts, Cold Walls, or Cold Floors
Walk your home on a cold January morning. Put a hand flat on an exterior wall, then on an interior wall. A noticeable difference points to thin or missing insulation.
Cold air near recessed lights, attic hatches, and ceiling vents usually means air is leaking, not just conducting. Insulation slows heat. Air sealing stops airflow. Most homes need both.
Your AC or Furnace Runs Almost Nonstop
Long cycles that never reach the thermostat setting are a load problem. Your equipment is fighting heat that keeps pouring in.
That extra runtime costs money now and shortens equipment life later. It also drives up wear on the blower and compressor.
Your Home Predates Current Insulation Standards
Building codes have raised attic insulation requirements several times. Older homes were built to the standards of their era.
In Fort Worth, our crews still find 1960s to 1980s homes with R-11 to R-19 in the attic. Newer builds often start higher but lose performance to gaps, settling, and missing air sealing at the top plates. You can see the patterns we run into on our Fort Worth attic insulation page.
Your Attic Insulation Looks Thin, Patchy, or Dirty
Open the hatch and look. Grey, matted, or dusty insulation has lost loft, and loft is what does the insulating.
Water stains, rodent droppings, or a musty smell mean the material needs to come out before anything new goes in. That is what insulation removal is for.
The 10-Minute Attic Insulation Check You Can Do Yourself
ENERGY STAR publishes a simple homeowner check. It takes about ten minutes and answers the question directly.
Bring a flashlight, a tape measure, safety glasses, and a dust mask. Step only on the joists or truss chords, never on the drywall between them.
One safety note first. If you see pea-size, flaky grey granules, that may be vermiculite, which can contain asbestos. Do not disturb it. Have it tested by an approved lab.
Step 1: Look Across the Joists
Shine your light across the attic floor. If the insulation sits level with or below the joists, you probably need to add more. If you cannot see the joists at all because insulation covers them well, you likely have enough.
Also check the edges. Attics often have plenty of insulation in the middle and almost none along the eaves.
Step 2: Measure the Depth and Do the Math
Push the tape measure straight down to the ceiling drywall. Note the depth in inches, then multiply.
- Loose fiberglass, light yellow, pink, or white: depth x 2.5
- Cellulose, small grey paper fibers: depth x 3.7
- Rock wool, dense grey or near white: depth x 2.8
- Fiberglass batts: depth x 3.2
Ten inches of loose fiberglass gives you roughly R-25. That is well short of what North Texas homes need.
Step 3: Compare It to the DFW Target
Dallas-Fort Worth sits in IECC Climate Zone 3. For an uninsulated attic in Zone 3, ENERGY STAR recommends adding R-49. If you already have 3 to 4 inches, it recommends adding R-38.
In loose blown fiberglass, R-49 works out to roughly 20 inches of depth. Most DFW attics we open are nowhere close. Closing that gap usually means a blown-in attic insulation top off rather than a full replacement.

Will Adding Insulation Really Lower Your Energy Bills?
Short answer: usually yes, and the mechanism is simple. Here is how it works, followed by the honest numbers.
Insulation Slows Heat Transfer
Heat always moves toward cold. In a Texas summer, that means attic heat pushing down into your ceilings. In winter, it means your heated air escaping upward.
Insulation does not block heat. It slows the rate at which heat crosses the ceiling. A higher R-value means a slower rate.
Slower Heat Transfer Means Less HVAC Runtime
Your AC is sized to remove a certain amount of heat per hour. Cut the heat coming in and the system reaches your set temperature sooner.
Shorter cycles use less electricity. They also let the system pull out more humidity. That is why a well insulated home feels cooler at the same thermostat setting.
What the Research Actually Shows
Here is where we part ways with a lot of insulation marketing. The EPA estimates an average saving of 15 percent on heating and cooling costs. That works out to about 11 percent of a total energy bill. The figure covers air sealing plus added insulation in attics, floors over crawl spaces, and basements.
That is an average across the whole country, and it assumes air sealing is done alongside the insulation. Some homes save less. Homes starting from R-11 in a 100 degree climate often save considerably more.
We will not promise you a specific percentage before we measure your home. Anyone who does is guessing.
Why Insulation Savings Vary From Home to Home
Two neighbors can install identical insulation and see different results. These are the variables that move the number:
- Your starting R-value. Going from R-11 to R-49 delivers far more than going from R-30 to R-49.
- Air leakage. Insulation cannot stop moving air. A leaky attic plane limits what new insulation can do.
- Duct condition. Ducts running through a hot attic lose conditioned air before it reaches your rooms.
- HVAC equipment. An aging or oversized system wastes energy regardless of insulation.
- How much of your bill is heating and cooling. All electric homes with heavy AC use have more to save than gas heated homes with mild usage.
- Thermostat habits. A household that holds 68 degrees all summer sees a different result than one that sets 76.
This is why we start with measurement rather than a quote.
When Insulation Alone Will Not Fix the Problem
Sometimes the attic is not the whole story. We tell homeowners this before they spend money, not after.
Leaky ducts can undo the benefit of a perfect insulation job. So can a failing compressor, blocked returns, or poor attic ventilation that bakes the insulation from above.
The fix depends on what we find. It might be duct work. It might be a radiant barrier, which cuts radiant heat before it hits your insulation. It might be a solar attic fan to push hot air out. Homes with irregular framing or an unvented roofline are often better served by spray foam insulation than by blown-in material.

Insulation Questions DFW Homeowners Ask
How often does attic insulation need to be replaced?
Blown fiberglass and cellulose do not expire on a schedule. They fail when they get wet, compressed, contaminated, or disturbed by rodents. Most attics need a top off rather than a full replacement.
Can I just add new insulation on top of the old?
Often yes. If the existing material is dry and clean, adding blown-in insulation over it is the cheaper path. If it is wet, moldy, or rodent damaged, it comes out first.
Does more insulation help in summer or only winter?
Both. In DFW, the summer benefit is usually larger. The gap between attic heat and indoor air is wider in July than in January.
How long does an attic insulation job take?
Most blown-in attic projects finish in a single day. Spray foam takes one to two days depending on attic size.
